Rinerhorn power station 2025

Starting point
Start of planning in 2016
Bergbahnen Rinerhorn AG has been pursuing the goal of utilising the existing snowmaking infrastructure to generate electricity from hydropower since 2016. Changes in the federal government's subsidy policy and the expansion of the system in the meantime have led to the project - in particular the construction of the reservoir - being continuously developed.
Project description
Two streams as an energy source
As part of the project, the existing snowmaking system will also be used to generate electricity - and even more efficiently than before. The construction of a new pump shaft at Rieberbach will increase annual electricity production by around 10 % to around 1.2 gigawatt hours. The integration of the reservoir also enables flexible power generation that can be adapted to seasonal and daily requirements.
The turbine house at the valley station in Davos Glaris is the centrepiece of the Rinerhorn hydropower plant. Together with the largely existing hydraulic engineering infrastructure, it forms the central facility for energy generation. The turbine house will also serve as a visitor and information centre in future. A planned educational trail will allow visitors to experience the creation and utilisation of hydropower.
This project will enable Bergbahnen Rinerhorn AG to cover more than half of its annual electricity consumption itself in future.
